THE URBAN INSERT A Place Making Challenge At Gateway Of India , Mumbai
In Collaboration With Architect Devashish Mohan
Completed in 2024
The Urban Insert was an open design competition by Archmello that invited participants to design a contemporary public installation at Mumbai’s Gateway of India, aiming to enhance the historic site through creative place-making. The proposal reimagines the Gateway of India plaza as an open-air theatre (OAT) that enhances circulation, usability, and leisure without disrupting existing functions. Centrally aligned with the Gateway and Shivaji Statue, it features stepped seating, green pockets, and a shaded walkway, with a gallery below to showcase local heritage and raise awareness about climate issues — all integrated seamlessly into the site’s landscape and context.
